Somehow, I survived being rescued by the jaws of life twice and made it through many years of rehabilitation and recovery. I was the client. I went to the painful PT appointments 3 times per week and sat, claustrophobic in the noisy MRI “shell”, and then sent to remote office buildings to sit for hours waiting for an IME appointment only to have the doctor report back that I was not injured. I know the struggle to get back to what used to be normal. What I didn’t know at the time is that recovery was teaching me that I could endure anything. So, when it was finally over, I took my settlement and put it aside to pay for law school so I could support others through their own recovery. I want to show them that they will come out of this even better than they were before. I became an attorney to show victims of car accidents that their recovery is a strange gift. It hurts so much, but if they push through, they will emerge smarter, tougher, stronger, and way more confident in themselves than they ever were before. I want to get my clients to the finish line to see who they can become. Just talking about it now makes me smile.

A person much smarter than me once said that we are not defined by what happens to us in life. We are defined by how we respond to what happens to us in life. So, when my clients call me, they are responding like a winner. They are making a choice and that choice is to not be a victim. So I approach each client with admiration and respect because they have already won, in my eyes. I am humbled by their bravery.
