Four people have been taken to a local hospital following a serious accident in Brooklyn. The car accident happened early on the morning of Jan. 12, according to New York police, and involved only a single vehicle. The accident is still under investigation by authorities and so far no charges have been filed.

Reports indicate the driver of a green sedan was traveling on a local roadway in Brooklyn around 4 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. The car left the road and struck a tree with enough force to trap the driver and all three passengers in the car. Police believe the driver was speeding at the time of the crash.

Emergency response teams managed to free all four occupants of the vehicle after some time, at which point all four were taken to local hospitals with varying injuries. Three of the four individuals involved in the wreck had injuries described as severe, while the fourth escaped with relatively minor injuries. It is not known at this time which of these individuals was the driver in question. Police have not pressed charges against the driver as of this writing, but charges are still possible.

Speeding is one of the leading causes of crashes in New York and elsewhere. If police determine this car accident was the result of the driver operating his vehicle at an unsafe speed, he could be held criminally liable for the injuries sustained in the wreck. Separately, the other injured parties may elect to commence personal injury suits against him in civil court. A speeding conviction could advance the cause of an accident victim’s civil claim that seeks reimbursement of financial losses.
