A 37-year-old Long Island woman was recently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs after she was involved in a two-vehicle accident in Centereach. The fatal accident, which claimed the life of a 20-year-old New York man, occurred at approximately 9 a.m. on May 28. The victim was attempting to turn onto Route 25 when he was hit by the woman’s vehicle, according to Suffolk County Police.
The man was later transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the woman has been charged by police with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. She will be arraigned on her charges in Central Islip at First District Court on a later date.
Driving while under the influence of drugs has drawn more attention recently, causing many police departments to step up their detection efforts. Unfortunately, not all impaired drivers can be stopped by law enforcement. And when drivers make the destructive decision to drink or consume drugs before driving, the consequences can be tragic.
In this case, one person is dead and a family likely devastated because one person made a bad choice. Hopefully this case will prompt other motorists to think twice before they drive their vehicles after they have consumed drugs or alcohol. It is only hoped that the victim’s family finds the strength to cope with their grief over what appears to have been a senseless and avoidable wrongful death.
