A man is facing serious charges after a single-vehicle accident claimed the life of a 19-year-old woman on Staten Island the night of July 26. New York police apprehended the 22-year-old man fleeing the scene of the fatal car accident that also put an 18-year-old woman into the hospital. So far, no court date has been announced.

According to the accident report, the vehicle driven by the 22-year-old man apparently ran a red light before going out of control. The car apparently swerved to avoid another vehicle before crashing into a traffic light pole in the center of the intersection. An 18-year-old woman was thrown violently from the vehicle, and the 19-year-old, who was in the back seat at the time, was found crushed into the trunk.

The older woman died at the scene and her friend was rushed to a nearby hospital where she is listed as being in critical condition. The driver apparently fled the scene on foot, but was quickly apprehended. Court records indicate this is not the first time the driver has been in a similar accident and has fled the scene before. He was placed under arrest.

It seems likely that, even though New York police do not believe alcohol was involved in the crash, the man will face serious criminal punishment for his role in the car accident. In addition, the grieving family of the deceased woman will be entitled to file for wrongful death against the man. The injured woman will be able to file for personal injury as well, with both cases using police evidence to back up their civil suits.
