A Carmel, NY woman is dead following a two-car pileup on April 29, according to local sources. New York emergency services responded to the car accident that also sent an elderly man to a hospital. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver involved in the accident, but police say their investigation is still underway.

Events Leading to Accident in Carmel, NY

State police have reported that a pickup truck driven by a 42-year-old man was traveling north on State Route 22 when the vehicle crossed the center line into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by a 65-year-old man. The two vehicles collided head-on, causing serious damage to both vehicles. A 63-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat of the southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving medical personnel.

The elder driver was rushed to a local hospital, but thankfully his injuries have been described as not life-threatening. The condition of the 42-year-old driver is not known. Police have not commented publicly on what might have precipitated the accident, but they are investigating why the northbound vehicle crossed the center line. They have not filed charges against the driver at this time.

Personal Injury Lawsuit a Possibility

If it can be proven that negligence, recklessness or other factors caused the younger driver to enter the wrong lane and cause the car accident, he may face serious charges related to the fatality and injuries caused. The surviving driver may also choose to file a personal injury suit on his own behalf, and the family of the deceased woman may wish to file a wrongful death suit in a New York civil court. Evidence gleaned from the police investigation can be used to support civil suits.
