Local police have arrested a man they say is responsible for a car crash that claimed two lives on July 24, according to news sources. New York police in the Lake Placid area arrested the 20-year-old man, who they say was driving recklessly when the car accident occurred. The man now faces several charges, including fleeing police, DUI by way of drugs and reckless driving.
New York State Police responded to the accident around 1:30 p.m., and it became apparent that a pickup truck had collided head on with a car. Local police had spotted the pickup truck speeding and had given chase; the driver of the pickup truck attempted to flee police before entering the eastbound lane and striking the car head-on. The driver of the pickup truck was immediately arrested and taken into custody.
The three occupants of the car had to be extricated by emergency workers. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and the front-seat passenger was rushed to a local hospital but died later that day. Their 11-year-old daughter, who was in the back seat, was also rushed to a hospital where her condition is described as serious but stable. Additional charges against the driver are pending, and he is currently in police custody awaiting trial.
If convicted, the driver will face serious repercussions, including possible jail time, depending upon the full list of the charges brought against him. Under New York law, the surviving family of the couple who were killed in the car accident will be entitled to file a wrongful death lawsuit against him as well, in addition to a personal injury lawsuit on behalf of the daughter. Evidence in the criminal case may go directly to support these civil cases if the family chooses to pursue them.
