A man sitting on a bench in Staten Island met an untimely end following a serious crash on the afternoon of June 24. The driver involved in the motor vehicle crash has been charged by New York authorities. Police believe the man behind the wheel may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. So far, no court date has been announced.
Reports indicate that the 57-year-old victim was sitting on a bench in Tompkinsville when the accident occurred. A vehicle headed southbound reportedly collided with another car attempting a left-hand turn in a westerly direction. The force of the impact sent the southbound SUV directly onto the sidewalk and into the bench on which the man was sitting.
The 57-year-old became trapped under the SUV, He died at the scene, according to medical examiners who arrived. The driver involved in the crash, a 25-year-old woman, was taken into custody by police at the scene, She has been charged with drunk driving. It is unclear whether she remains in police custody ahead of her unannounced court date.
Should New York authorities find the woman guilty on the charge of drunk driving, her role in this motor vehicle crash could land her in jail, among other penalties. Regardless of the criminal proceedings, the family of the deceased man is entitled under state law to file for wrongful death against her in a civil court. Any evidence used to implicate her in a criminal court setting may be offered to support such a lawsuit.
