A teenager who was a passenger in a multi-car crash in Cicero has tragically died, according to local sources. The fatal accident, which happened on Oct. 3, also hospitalized two other people. New York authorities are still in the process of determining what caused the crash, and they have not yet filed charges against the driver involved.
The accident report says a 16-year-old boy was headed north on Interstate 81 around 6:30 a.m. when, for reasons unknown, his vehicle crossed the grassy median. It entered the southbound lanes, where it struck another vehicle, spun, and struck a third. The force of the impact injured three people, prompting all of them to be rushed to a local hospital.
The front-seat passenger in the second vehicle, also a 16-year-old male, was pronounced dead after arrival at the hospital. The offending driver is listed as being in critical condition. There is no word on the condition of the third party. Police are still sifting through debris and trying to reconstruct the accident in the hopes of determining what caused the boy to cross the center median.
If New York police determine the driver was acting irresponsibly, either through negligence or recklessness, at the time of the fatal accident, it is still possible they could file charges against him. Even if no charges are filed, the truth remains that his vehicle entered a lane going the wrong direction. This may be enough for the family of the deceased teenager and the surviving third individual to file wrongful death and/or personal injury suits against the driver’s family and anyone else with ownership interest in the vehicle.
