car accident emergency calling 911

It is a typical day, you have just finished work and are traveling home to have dinner with your family and BAM.

You’ve been hit by another driver!

At first, you are likely in a state of shock.
Then you may start to feel…
Pain, Worry Concern, Anger

A host of emotions will likely overcome you and then uncertainty sets in.

What do I do now?
Sobo & Sobo would like to help. We’ve worked with countless accident victims and can offer our thoughts on some of the things you should do after an accident.

Do your very best to remain calm.

It is human nature to begin to feel panicked in the seconds after an accident. As best you can, remain calm. When people are panicked, they tend to make poor decisions so take a deep breath and try to relax.

Ensure you are safe

If you are in an accident and you find yourself in an unsafe location where you could attain additional injuries, it is best to try to move to a safer location.

Call for help

Pick up your phone and call 911. If your phone was thrown out of your reach during the accident or it causes you pain to retrieve it, be sure to make eye contact with someone (people tend to panic in the face of an accident) and be sure that they call 911 for help.

Seek Medical Attention

Even if you are not in pain at the time, make sure a medical professional looks at you as soon as possible. Sometimes shock takes over and symptoms are not felt right away. You don’t want to risk further injury, so please even if you don’t feel like it, seek medical attention.

Don’t Be Quick To Assume Responsibility

Once the police arrive on the scene, remain calm and tell them what happened. In pressure situations, people tend to babble and you may use words that you do not really mean to indicate the accident was your fault. We are not asking you to lie or not speak to the police, we are merely suggesting that you think about the words you are saying.

Gather Information

If you are physically able to do so, gather the names and contact information of any potential witnesses to the accident. It is also a good idea to get the name and badge number of the police who are at the scene and be sure to request a copy of the accident report.

Talk To A Lawyer ASAP

We are aware that saying you need to speak with an attorney right away sounds like the beginning of a sales pitch, but it really is in your best interest to do so. There are several reasons:

  • The sooner you speak to a lawyer, the better because all the details of the accident will be fresh in your mind.
  • An attorney can help you to understand your rights under the law and help to make sure you are treated fairly.
  • Lawyers can review your case and help you make the best decisions as to the next steps so that the outcome of your situation is as positive as possible.
  • We can help to lessen your stress and take on some of the burden. Facing a legal battle can be daunting, the sooner you have someone on your side, the better!
