A young girl was killed in a hit-and-run, according to local sources. The girl and her mother were struck in a car accident on Feb. 23, according to New York police. Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to the accident report, the 7-year-old girl and her mother were struck by a black SUV around 8 a.m. the morning in question. The driver of the SUV, a 33-year-old male, allegedly got out to survey the accident scene before fleeing. The girl was trapped under a wheel of the vehicle at the time.

The 26-year-old female owner of the vehicle, who says she was not in the vehicle when the accident happened, reported the vehicle stolen some 40 minutes after the accident occurred. She was arrested alongside her boyfriend, the driver of the SUV, later on that day. They have both been charged with filing false reports, and the boyfriend was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and hindering apprehension. The couple were due to appear in court on Mar. 2.

If the New York court finds them responsible in any way for the fatal car accident that claimed the life of the little girl, they could face serious jail time for their role in the crash. In addition, the family of the deceased girl is entitled under state law to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver, the girlfriend as owner of the vehicle, and anyone else with ownership interest in the car. Such a suit would use evidence garnered from the official investigation to support itself in civil court.
