Sobo & Sobo Announces Third Place Recipients of the Annual Scholarship Essay Contest

MIDDLETOWN, NY – Sobo & Sobo, LLP. today announced Erin Catherine Boyle, from Pine Bush High School, Sindi Daci, from Herbert H. Lehman High School in the Bronx, and Jonathan Andrew Vargas, from Warwick Valley Central School District were selected as the third place winners of the 2020 Annual Sobo & Sobo Scholarship contest that included entries from schools throughout the Greater Hudson Valley and New York City.
Following an online application process, which included an essay exploring the implications of technology on personal injury, finalists from over 35 schools in five counties were selected for in-person interviews. Greg Sobo, managing partner, noted that “We were thrilled by the caliber of entries we received and humbled by the volume of interest in our scholarship. The depth of passion, ingenuity and overall potential for this next generation is truly heartening.”

The committee reviewed 100+ applications to determine the scholarship recipients. Erin Catherine Boyle from Pine Bush High School, Sindi Daci from Herbert H. Lehman High School in the Bronx, and Jonathan Andrew Vargas from Warwick Valley Central School District won third place and each will receive $500 educational stipends to defray the cost of their freshman year of college.

Multitasking was of interest to both Erin and Sindi. Sindi shared, “As technology has advanced…it has shortened society’s attention span and threatens to make every event double tasking.” Erin observed the challenge this creates, “…our senses are not attuned to the visual and auditory cues that our brains need in order to make safe decisions. So while we may think we are saving time or multitasking by using our technology while walking…we are really increasing the opportunity for personal injury to occur.”

Jonathan explored the challenges of social media on mental health, including bullying and the practice of enhancing images. “The standards of beauty have increased to an unrealistic height…(teenagers) believe that their natural beauty isn’t good enough…In today’s society, everyone, especially adolescents will tend to always have their phones on them which makes them more vulnerable to these attacks at all times of the day.”

Due to social distance requirements the local receptions at which all winners were to be recognized were cancelled. Please help us to get these students the recognition they deserve.
