How Did Your Upbringing Lead You To Become A Lawyer?

My father, Gary Sobo, is a lawyer. One particular day when I was young, I remember going to a local department store with my father. While we were there, a woman approached my father and thanked him for the work that he had done for her. She was clearly so appreciative for what he had done for her. To this day, I have no idea what my father did for her, but I was always struck by how appreciative people were for my dad’s good work. I wanted to have that same feeling.

What Do You Love About Your Job?

I love the challenge and competition that the practice of law presents. Every case presents a new unique challenge and opportunity for success. I love having the opportunity to give 100% of my efforts to helping victims of injuries, and I truly enjoy meeting new people and exploring how we can help.

Describe One Of Your Accomplishments As A Lawyer.

I am particularly proud of the firm, Sobo & Sobo, LLP, that I helped to build and create. I am proud of the talented and devoted people that are members of the firm, and of how hard they work every day to help innocent victims. Tell Me About Your Past Experience Handling Personal Injury Cases?

I have been working in the field of personal injury law for over 15 years. I have personally handled almost every type of personal injury case, and have become knowledgeable about a wide spectrum of accident induced injuries. I have negotiated countless settlements, engaged in numerous mediations and arbitrations, and have litigated many cases to a jury verdict where the jury awarded substantial sums in favor of our clients.

What Do You Love About Your Job?

One of the things I love about my job is that it is never boring. There are always new people to meet and new problems to be solved. Even with thousands of closings done, I am amazed that unique situations keep occurring, needing research and thought to resolve. I always try to resolve these in a way most favorable to the client.

Tell Me About Your Past Experience Handling Real Estate Cases?

My experience includes two years serving with the Attorney General of the State of New York, involved with eminent domain proceedings and consumer complaints. I also served eight years as Assistant County Attorney of Orange County, New York handling the same issues, as well as being general counsel for the Orange County Community College. I have been conducting real estate closings for over 40 years. I have represented countless buyers, sellers, and banks in real estate transactions, both residential and commercial. I also have extensive experience in estate matters, having practiced in the Surrogate’s Courts since 1969.

What do you love about your job?

I love fighting for, and successfully protecting, the rights of clients. I receive great satisfaction in negotiating successful settlements to compensate them for what they have had to endure. I help to make them whole again.

Why did you become a lawyer?

I was raised to fight for what I believed in, and to help those in need. I am proud to say I have been able to accomplish both throughout my career. Over twenty years ago, I began as an Assistant District Attorney standing up for the rights of those who were victims of crimes. As the Supervising Attorney at Sobo and Sobo, I am still able to protect the rights of the injured due to the actions of others.

 Describe how you approach your personal injury cases.

Each and every client is extremely important to me, and I fight for their rights as if they were a member of my own family. In doing so, I have been able to obtain settlements that others could not.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped shape you as a lawyer?

One of the most important aspects of my background is my litigation experience. This has given me both the perspective and insight to maximize settlements on behalf of my clients for injuries sustained due to the actions of others. While the overwhelming majority of personal injury matters settle before trial, my clients can feel confident in knowing that they have an experienced trial attorney fighting for them.

Describe one of your accomplishments as a lawyer:

In the past, I have worked on many Manhattan coop, condo and commercial acquisitions and refinances. Previously, as General Counsel for a boutique development company, I was able to work on larger acquisitions, construction law and complicated corporate matters.

How do you approach real estate cases?

My initial approach with a client is getting to know about their deal, what they hope to accomplish, what they think is fair or unfair and trying to find a common ground to make all sides satisfied. More often than not, the purchase or sale is a big event in the client’s life. It’s important to make them feel comfortable and understand the process from start to finish. If a corporation is purchasing a large property, it’s important to know the best way to structure the transaction in order to protect the individuals.

Do you have an approach to your job that prospective clients should know about?

I pride myself on providing personalized attention to all clients. I will work hard to help injured workers obtain all workers’ compensation benefits they are entitled to.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

I was raised in a home with a father, mother, an older sister and two younger brothers. I found that I intensely disliked conflicts when there were disputes within our family. Even in elementary school, I periodically would try to resolve small personal conflicts that emerged. As I went through Middle School and High School, I found I had a knack for settling family squabbles. If nothing else, these experiences clearly prepared me for a career of capably resolving so many personal injury matters to the gain of so many clients.

What do you love about your job?

Assisting clients in securing the best possible legal recovery by getting to know, understand, and appreciate all aspects of their claims.

Describe one of your accomplishments as a lawyer:

More than twelve years ago, I was able to secure a very significant legal recovery for two young boys and their respective families from the mid-Hudson region of New York. In that case, two young children fell off of a roof and had landed in a muddied patch of grass surrounding an apartment building after descending six stories. Amazingly, the boys managed to survive this tragedy, but they were terribly and permanently injured. The case was full of enormous legal obstacles. As was expected, the defendant repeatedly denied all responsibility for having caused the accident. However, backed by strong investigations which I had directed, including having retained a competent engineer along with a child psychologist, I was able to put together a credible theory of liability. I initiated the lawsuit for the boys; completed all necessary discovery; convinced the court that the matter should be permitted to proceed to trial; prepared the case for trial and in the end, I was able to secure a very significant and meaningful settlement just as we were about to begin jury selection. Further, after the settlement was negotiated, after several months, I was able to resolve a very substantial lien held by the local Department of Social Services in a novel way to the full satisfaction of my clients and their families.

Tell me about your past experience handling personal injury cases?

I started in the field of personal injury as an attorney in the early 1990s. I have worked on behalf of accident victims continuously since. I am proud to say I have faithfully served many personal injury clients during those years. I have enjoyed the opportunities I have had to make a real difference in the lives of the families I’ve helped. I have every intention to continue serving the public in this specialized field of law for many years to come.

First and foremost, do everything I can to understand all aspects of my client’s personal injury claim, and then do whatever is necessary in an ethical way to help secure the most meaningful recovery which can be achieved under the circumstances.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

I had started a petition in elementary school to allow more time to talk during lunch. We were denied. However, after I graduated to middle school the following year, I was informed that the elementary school had changed its policy. Words and rules are the stock in trade for lawyers. I believed the best way in which I could change things for the better was to become an attorney.

What do you love about your job?

I love making a difference in peoples’ lives. Drafting motions and appeals preserve for trial the claims of injured people when their cases are at their most vulnerable. Describe one of your accomplishments as a lawyer:

A private motorcycle driving school required students to sign releases, and my client sustained injuries when the instructor blocked her path. The school made a motion to dismiss all claims based upon my client’s signed release. The case law on signed Releases supported the school. However, my legal research revealed New York State Regulations had directed drivers-education schools not to issue Releases on public policy grounds. As a result, not only did the school lose its motion to dismiss, but I had won my cross-motion to entirely dismiss the defense of a signed Release.

Why did you become an attorney?

Like most people, I perceive that sometimes power can impede justice or can impose an injustice. I became an attorney to represent people. Particularly when they are physically weakened and in need of an advocate against highly skilled attorneys representing large insurance companies.

Describe how you approach your personal injury cases:

The best way to understand a case is to ask the client why he or she believes the other party is responsible or negligent. Then alternate my activity between investigation of the facts and research of the applicable law. A course is then strategized and followed for eventual success.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped you as a lawyer?

I regret that I did not go directly from college to law school. However, after college I obtained first-hand knowledge of employment in retail, warehouse and construction work. I have direct insight into the procedures, equipment and business utilized in those industries from which most cases arise.

What do you love about your job?

The thing I love most about my job is the ability to help others. We meet clients at a time when they need support and someone to advocate for them. I can be that voice. It’s rewarding when I can negotiate and achieve results for individuals who put their trust in me, protecting their interests and asserting their rights when they have been wronged.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

I grew up in a family of Law Enforcement, my Grandfather was a retired Police Officer with the NYPD and was an Investigator working in the Insurance Industry. My Mother worked for the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. I have several cousins who work in Law Enforcement or Corrections. I have always been interested in the Law and the various aspects of it.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

Growing up, I was constantly helping in my family’s business. I witnessed different areas of law and observed how the law could be used in a multitude of ways. I was intrigued and realized that becoming a lawyer would allow me to be part of a historic profession that is constantly evolving, while being able to use the law to protect the rights of individuals who have suffered losses due to the actions of others.

What do you love about your job?

My clients. It’s rewarding when I can negotiate and achieve results for individuals who put their trust in me, to protect their interests and assert their rights in situations where they have been wronged.

Describe one of your accomplishments as a lawyer:

Negotiating for my clients. I have had clients in frustrating situations with limited options. I have been able to put in the time and research to develop theories that allowed me to negotiate on behalf of my clients, which have led to favorable outcome.

Why did you become a lawyer?

Supreme Court Justice, Robert H. Jackson said it best: “Law, as the expression of the ultimate will and wisdom of a people, has so far proven the safest guardian of liberty yet devised.” There are situations where individuals may feel that they do not have a voice. Lawyers are used to give those individuals voices, especially in situations where corporations may be trying to silence those voices. I wanted to be able to join a profession that could protect and assert the rights and liberties that individuals are entitled to.

Are you a member of any organizations or associations that you feel are important?

I have been a featured speaker for numerous organizations whose goals include the development of the younger generations. I have always felt that these events and organizations are crucial due to the emphasis on education, innovation and progression within our society.

Describe how you approach your personal injury cases:

My approach is to listen. Every case, every individual and every family is unique. I listen to understand my clients, their situations, and to gather all the details of their case. Listening and gathering details allows me to fully know my clients and their cases, inside and out. Having this information allows me to be effective in negotiations and in court when advocating for my clients.

There is no greater satisfaction than a jury verdict in favor of your client.

Why did you become a lawyer?

I enjoy the challenge of helping people through the very difficult issues that arise when legal problems enter their individual lives.

Are you a member of any organizations or associations?

I am a member of the New York State Bar Association because I believe it is important to stay in touch with statewide and national issues affecting lawyers and our clients. The Bar Association also helps me keep up to date on changes and developments in the law.

I want to learn as much about the individual and the case as possible. I want the client to understand the strengths and the weaknesses of their individual case and I want the client to know that we have to work together to obtain the best result.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped shape you as a lawyer?

I have lived and worked in a variety of places and with a lot of different people from diverse backgrounds. I think this experience has helped me to understand people and problems and to do a better job for our clients.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

My father, uncle, and grandfather were all attorneys, and my father was also a local Judge in my hometown. I’ve been immersed in legal culture since I was very young, particularly personal injury law, and I’ve always known it was what I wanted to do.

What do you love about your job?

I love that I am able to help people every single day. I love being able to tell my clients when they are concerned about their accident, “Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.”

Describe one of your accomplishments as a lawyer:

I have helped many clients and settled many cases, so it is difficult to pick just one accomplishment. Every victory for every client is an accomplishment that I am proud of.

Why did you become a lawyer?

I became a lawyer primarily because I feel that legal work has always been my calling, but also because I wanted to follow in my family’s footsteps and continue my grandfather’s legacy.

I approach every injury case with a personal approach which aims to help my clients through this stressful time, and at the same time is also focused on getting the best possible result for each client.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped shape you as a lawyer?

I feel that my growing up immersed in the personal injury atmosphere has helped me understand that being a personal injury attorney is, first and foremost, about helping people. I was able to grasp this concept at a young age, and I believe that this has helped me shape my approach to each particular case and address each client’s individual needs moving forward.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

I was brought up by a generous, compassionate, hardworking middle class family. My parents always did their best to provide for me and my brother, never resting on their laurels and always putting family first. They instilled in me the core moral and ethical values which helped me shape my work ethic.

What do you love about your job?

The one thing I love most about my job is that I am able to help people with the skills I have been fortunate to acquire. Each day comes with a new experience and a unique challenge that I am always willing to accept.

I evaluate each new client by immersing myself in their case, contacting them, updating them on the status of their case, and making each client feel comfortable. It’s important to let the clients know I’m here for them and they’re not forgotten.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped shape you as a lawyer?

I faced many obstacles on my journey to becoming a lawyer but I feel that being the first in my family to break the glass ceiling of becoming a lawyer has helped me become more determined, more persistent and more grateful. I always knew I wanted to study and practice law. My father’s dedication to his law practice and serving his clients intrigued me. As a child, I vividly remember watching my father researching and preparing for his cases. That is the type of lawyer I strive to be: dedicated and well prepared.

My passion for competition is the driving force behind my hard work and preparation to get the best outcome for my clients. I love the intellectual challenge of being a lawyer. I have had the opportunity to serve as a prosecutor for several courts in Orange County, NY. My biggest accomplishments were helping bring justice for victims and their families.

My parents own a local deli/catering business and they truly showed me the value of hard work. I worked there throughout high school and I got to meet so many great customers. I really enjoyed helping people. In college, I began taking law courses and I realized that law was my passion.

I was raised by hardworking and loving parents who always tried to help others and put family first. They instilled in me a strong moral code that led me to want to help those in need. I approach each case as if it is my only case and devote my full attention to getting my clients compensated for their loss. I understand that to the client their case is the most important thought on their minds, and I treat each case as such. It is my goal to work as hard as I can on every case to obtain a fair and just outcome.

Why did you become a lawyer?

I grew up in a business family, and was often surrounded by legal issues as I watched my father run the business and deal with day-to-day matters. It became apparent to me that it was important to learn about legal issues and how these issues affect us in our day to day working lives, whether it’s in business or in our personal situations. Hence, I went to law school and have practiced ever since.

From a very young age, I always had a sense of right and wrong and the need for people to be treated equally and fairly. As far back as middle school, I remember always wanting to see that my little friends were included in everything and not left out of anything. I remember once standing up for a little girl in the school yard who was being ostracized for no reason and taking her under my wing. It was many years later at my mother’s funeral at the age of 18, that the little girl’s mother came up to me and reminded me of that. It’s amazing how grateful people are and how they remember when you stand for what is right and just. I thank my parents for instilling that in me.

What do you love about your job?

First, I love the firm for whom I work, and my colleagues. I love the fact that the emphasis is always on getting the best for the client. The client is number one and everything revolves around each one of them. I also love the fact that my work is challenging, and I am always busy. I love that as lawyers, we share information and discuss cases with enthusiasm, compassion and openness. Above all, I love personal injury law because it’s interesting. I believe it’s very important to know your client’s injuries well and to understand the limitations that an injury can place on the whole body not just the injured part.

Describe one of your accomplishments as a lawyer:

I remember early on in my career, when I first started out, endeavoring to settle a case on behalf of my client who had been injured in a slip and fall accident. We were at a mediation in Manhattan, NY and opposing counsel was adamant they weren’t paying next nor near what my client was seeking to settle. We spent all day in that mediation and refused to be low balled. We ended up walking away with even more than my client had expected. That was an accomplishment that made me happy because my client was ecstatic with the results.

What is your past experience handling personal injury cases?

I have handled personal injury cases on both the plaintiff and defense side. I think it’s good to have a perspective from both sides of the coin. Having worked on the defense side, for many years, I have learned how insurance companies and their adjusters think and operate in terms of willingness to settle and the varying requirements of insurance companies. That certainly helps me as a plaintiff’s lawyer when time arrives, for negotiating or settling a claim.

Describe how you approach your personal injury cases?

I generally keep in mind, that while cases often appear similar, clients have different needs and I endeavor to work towards meeting those needs. I also try to keep in mind, that people react very differently to injuries, so what might be minor to one client, may have an extremely negative impact on another’s life and wellbeing.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

My father was a Chief in the US Navy, so my brothers and I were brought up with respect for the law, civic duty, and service to others. As a result, I wanted a career in service of others and gravitated naturally to the field of law where I could be an advocate for the legal rights of individuals.

What do you love about your job?

I enjoy supporting others and working with others toward a common goal. Especially with writing motions, I get to research and find solutions for others and work with other attorneys to succeed as a team.

Why did you become a lawyer?

I became an attorney because I wanted a career where I can help people and make a specific individual impact on peoples lives. Being a lawyer gave me a broad range of career options all of were interesting and allowed me to support the people around me.

Describe how you approach your real estate or personal injury cases:

I start by making sure I understand the file. I ensure that I don’t just know what the motion is for but how it relates to the client, the needs of the case, and the facts. I feel it is important for the motion to be connected to the case and to the needs and objectives that molded it.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped shape you as a lawyer?

I have been very curious throughout my life. Curiosity leads me to enjoy legal research and enjoy motion practice which is often about finding answers to new questions and discover solutions to novel problems.

I have been handling personal injury cases of all kinds for nearly 40 years. I have represented both plaintiffs and defendants, individuals, corporations, and municipalities.

I believe that everyone deserves their Day in Court and I have committed my entire professional career to making sure my clients’ stories are heard.

What would you say is unique about you?

My diverse experience gives me a unique yet balanced perspective on the cases that are entrusted to me.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

Growing up, I was very close with my great-grandmother. She had a saying that stuck with me from an early age— you are not better, or more important, than anyone else on this planet, regardless of your circumstances in life, and vice versa, no one on is better than you. I was taught very early that regardless of upbringings, careers, or social status, everyone deserves to be treated equally. Unfortunately, in our society, people are not always treated equally and I found that a career as an attorney would help me do my part, and hopefully make a small difference.

What do you love about your job?

I love the team environment that Sobo & Sobo fosters. While I may be the attorney “assigned” to a case, there is no shortage of people that I can turn to in order to bounce ideas off of. Everyone is willing to collaborate and help each other ensure the best possible outcomes for our clients.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped shape you as a lawyer?

The ability to speak Spanish has enabled me to communicate with clients in their native language. I find that most are instantly placed at ease in the knowledge that someone understands them.

I enjoy the sense of accomplishment when a case is resolved in a satisfactory manner.

Describe how you approach your personal injury cases:

I always approach personal injury cases with empathy. Most clients are scared because they never realized how much a fall or a car accident can have on their lives. The process can go on for so long that it becomes frustrating and maddening. I always let clients know that my priority is putting them on the right track to get healed, because that’s really the whole point. It’s not about money or dramatic lawsuits. My mentor in Florida always told his clients this: “we might have you until the end of your case, but win or lose, you have your body for the rest of your life.” That common-sense remark always stuck with me.

What do you love about your job?

Helping people who have been injured, through no fault of their own, get justice.

Describe how you approach your personal injury cases:

From day one, it’s all about client contact, keeping them informed of the process and status of their case. When I first get a case, the first thing I do is look at it from a trial perspective and ask myself what do I need to build up the case and get what I need to prove the case.

Do you or did you do any volunteer work?

I volunteered with the Legal Aid Society of Rockland County, providing free legal services to people in a variety of different cases.

Do you or did you do any volunteer work?

I volunteered for the Farmworker Legal Assistance Clinic at Cornell Law School. I helped undocumented immigrants obtain relief before the immigration courts, and I worked on several Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) cases as well as asylum cases. I also volunteered for an English language association in France where I was a teacher.

Do you have any hobbies?

I enjoy playing and listening to Irish music and folk music in general. I used to play the clarinet in a conservatory of music, and I still enjoy playing the clarinet on my time off. I used to help everyday on a family owned dairy farm.

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

Reading and gardening are two of my main hobbies. I am also a devoted fan of author Ann Rice. As for gardening, my garden was selected by the Garden Lovers Club to be sponsored in the local and distinguished Walking Garden Tours.

What led you to becoming an attorney?

I became an attorney to use my skills to help people navigate an antiquated and confusing system.

The most important part of my approach is transparency; I use my expertise to give you a thorough understanding of your case so you can make informed and empowered decisions.

I am firmly committed to facilitating people’s access to our country’s many systems and resources in their efforts to succeed. I became an attorney because the justice system is an integral part of our country and I derive great joy and fulfillment from ensuring that everyone gets a fair shake when they choose to engage with it.

What led you to becoming an attorney?

grew up around a lot of languages. A lot of individuals get confused and frustrated when they don’t understand a language. I always felt bad for those people and tried my best to translate and make them feel included in the conversation. The legal field is a language of itself. The legal field is filled with words that people don’t understand. My aim has always been to cut down on the legalese and explain things in a way that my Spanish speaking uncle, who just learned English a few years ago, can understand. What led you to become an attorney?

I have always known that I wanted to help people and from a young age, I was interested in the law and how it impacted my everyday life. Throughout my time in school, I realized I genuinely enjoyed standing up for others, especially during their times of need.

When I was working as a criminal defense attorney I was able to get cases dismissed on procedural grounds. I was ecstatic for my clients because they were going through an extremely stressful and traumatic experience. I like spending time with my fiancee Sari, playing with our sheepadoodle Louie, traveling and playing tennis.

What is the most successful outcome you’ve had for a case?

I had the unique opportunity to represent a client in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, whose companion animal suffered fatal injuries and died while under the control of a dog walking company. In New York, animals are considered property, thus damages in these types of situations are ordinarily limited to the animal’s fair market value. While animal cases are generally considered profitless,  I took the case because it was the right thing to do. During motion practice, the dog walking company filed a motion to dismiss our complaint because the decedent was a canine, not a human. We opposed the motion and after oral argument, the Court allowed our action to continue, placing my client in an advantageous position that ultimately yielded a substantial settlement against all odds.

The arts, cycling, and training my dog.

What led you to become an attorney?

Personal injuries can unfortunately happen to anyone at any time. Those who are injured need someone they trust to guide them through the many problems that follow. A young woman was driving her car near a busy shopping center when a negligent driver struck the driver side of her vehicle. Her vehicle was pushed into an adjacent light post, and her foot was injured while pressing down on her breaks. Her injuries went untreated for some time due to extensive insurance issues. A lawsuit was filed on her behalf, and through Steve’s detailed attention to her needs, she was able to obtain the treatment she needed to return to her life.

When Steve is not busy representing the injured, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, camping, and traveling to new places.

Chris was inspired to become an attorney following in the footsteps of his mother.

What led you to becoming an attorney?

Growing up, I was greatly influenced by one of my father’s best friends, Bill Gearty, who was a lawyer and got me interested in helping others as he had done.

Do you have an approach to your job that prospective clients should know about?

As a personal injury attorney, and one who has been injured in motor vehicle collisions myself,  I understand how a client’s life can be upended by suffering injuries, whether in a car crash, trip and fall, or other type of injury.  It’s important to me to hear from the client what areas of their life have suffered as a result of injuries they’ve received so that we can communicate the full impact of what they have suffered to the insurance company, judges , and juries.

We lawyers have a long tradition of fighting for the rights of people.  I’m proud to be a part of that tradition and to be able to help people piece their lives back together after suffering misfortune.

What is the most successful outcome you’ve had for a case?

I litigated a case involving a senior driver involved in intersection collision with a garbage truck. Our client had to be extracted from his car and suffered numerous broken bones as well as a head injury which ultimately required him to live in an assisted living facility. The Defense alleged that our driver had been speeding, while we claimed that the driver of the garbage truck had edged past the stop line and pulled into traffic when it was unsafe to do so and blocked both travel lanes causing the crash. Retrieving the Event Data Recorder (EDR or ‘Black Box”) from his car, we were able to prove that our client was not speeding and reach a good settlement for him.

What are some of your activities or hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy family get-togethers, attending concerts, traveling, and collecting sports memorabilia.  I am an active adult baseball player and general manager for the Washington (Connecticut) Baseball Club which fields teams in Over-27 and Over-38 leagues.

What led you to becoming an attorney?

I always wanted a career where I could be in a position to help others who may not be able to help themselves.  After spending some time after college, assessing possible options and speaking with a number of people, I decided that becoming a lawyer is a great path to help those who need specialized assistance that they cannot provide for themselves.

My first jury trial was on behalf of a personal injury victim injured while refereeing a men’s league recreational hockey game. It was a very difficult case because of complex liability and insurance coverage issues, but it was an honor and a privilege to accompany my client through the trial and to hear the jury come back with a verdict in his favor. It was also, for me, a rare and valuable masterclass in trial advocacy as I handled aspects of the trial under the tutelage of an accomplished trial attorney and esteemed mentor at my firm, who has since retired, against a veteran defense trial attorney. Well over 100 trials between the three of us! My mentor taught me a lesson that I carry with me into every trial since: everyone has a will to win, the key is the will to prepare to win.

Achieving a great settlement award in a matter where the client sought pain relief in a chiropractic setting. The client’s neck was broken. She had pre-existing conditions which became a targeted battleground in the case, and she deteriorated during the years in litigation further limiting her ability to be a witness. The settlement was hard fought but a great success and relief for this client.

Playing golf, going to the gym, skiing, spending time with my kids, watching football (Buffalo Bills) and hockey (Buffalo Sabres), and writing.

I have always liked solving problems and helping people. Every case is unique and so there is also something interesting in each. Plus, I like winning.

Growing up in NYC with immigrant family members and friends led me to want to help others with day-to-day legal matters. Describe one of your accomplishments as a lawyer.

During the course of my career, I have had many memorable events and experienced many accomplishments. However, the best accomplishment is the moment when I finally advise my client that I have obtained a favorable settlement.

What led you to becoming an attorney?

I first became interested in becoming an attorney in the 9th grade. I had a baseball coach who was an attorney, and he frequently told me I should look into it as a career, because of the way I argued with him. The idea stuck, and it is the only career I ever seriously considered.

I was walking on the road in the countryside, Clarendon. A police officer stopped a poor farmer who was operating an illegal truck. A small circle gathered around the officer and the farmer. The Officer asked each person why he should not incarcerate the man, and when it was my turn, I gave the best reason. The farmer was not arrested, and his vehicle was not taken away. The community and the officer were impressed, and I was crowned the community attorney at 9 years old.

What are some of the most successful outcomes you’ve had representing personal injury and class action plaintiffs?

In a small county practice, I have secured 19 seven-figure verdicts or recoveries.

Notably, multiple verdicts or settlements involve matters in which the defense had tendered smaller offers which were declined and resulted in larger settlements or verdicts. In example, in the case of Paul J., the defense offered a small settlement which we rejected and we then recovered 21x that amount for the client.

Also significantly, I developed cases in a manner to place the insurer at risk for its unreasonable settlement posture. This is critical in cases involving serious injuries but only limited coverage. In these instances, we hold the insurer’s liable for the full extent of the client’s injuries despite the defendant’s limited coverage. In example, I had an insurer pay a settlement 9x more when its insured had a set coverage.

Ashley’s journey into law began in childhood, as her mother nurtured her skills in reading and writing with a unique regimen: before enjoying the freedoms of summer, Ashley would visit the local library to select novels, read them, and prepare detailed reports for her mother’s review. While these exercises were simply routine at the time, they sparked a foundation in critical thinking, communication, and empathy that Ashley would later channel into a career dedicated to representing and defending others. Inspired by her mother’s guidance and her early inclination to speak up for others, Ashley followed a path that led her to excel in the legal field.

What are some of your activities or hobbies outside of work?

Beyond the courtroom, Ashley is passionate about youth mentorship, professional development, reading, traveling, writing, and music.

What led you to become an attorney?

Melissa became an attorney to combat the discrimination, and or injustices, committed against clients.

Melissa believes in fast results for clients, and seeks justice as soon as possible for them.

Melissa loves when clients have a positive legal result, and discrimination, and or injustices committed against clients have been successfully combatted.

What are some of your activities or hobbies outside of work?

Melissa’s favorite activities include international travel, yoga, pilates, hiking, and walking.

What led you to become an attorney?

As the son of a lawyer, going to law school was always something on my mind. However, the reason I got into litigation specifically is largely due to my mom. Growing up my mom worked for the American Red Cross and the United Way, where she always emphasized the importance of caring for others and giving back to our community. In many ways, I am proud to say I’m a combination of them both – doing my very best to help those in my community navigate through some of the most challenging times of their life.

What do you love about your job?

I love being able to wake up and know that my day will be spent helping people find resolution to some of the most troubling times in their life.

What are some of your activities or hobbies outside of work?

White-water kayaking, rec-league basketball and golf.

What led you to become an attorney?

Like many who go into law, my love for it started with fiction. I read every John Grisham novel and watched scores of Law & Order reruns. Regardless of the type of law covered, it showed the kind of person I wanted to be: the person who did right on behalf of others using the systems our society has put in place.

What do you love about your job?

I love the opportunity to help my clients get through a difficult period of their lives and help them get relief on the other side.

What are some of your activities or hobbies outside of work?

I lift weights, critique television and film, and write fictional screenplays.

What led you to become an attorney?

I became a lawyer because I wanted to help people. It didn’t matter if it was helping someone fill out a medical form to get the proper benefits owed or advocating against a big insurance company who wants to unfairly compensate my injured client, helping people get what they deserve was my motivation to become a lawyer.

What do you love about your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. If someone is coming to me, they have a real problem, one that is substantially impacting their daily life. This job allows me to support, guide, and counsel someone through what may be their most trying times. I love working with clients. Nothing is better than helping those who have suffered from an unfortunate event and getting them fully compensated for their injury and loss.

Do you have an approach to your job that prospective clients should know about?

I want my clients to feel that their case is my only case. No matter the injury or scope of loss, they can call me at any time, because I devote my full attention to getting my clients fully compensated for their loss. I recognize that my client’s injury and claim may be the most important event of their life at the time and I treat it as such. My clients have put their trust in me to navigate them through this life event, and I do everything in my power to demonstrate every day they made the right decision.

How did your upbringing lead you to become a lawyer?

My parents were lower middle class working people. My father was a college graduate who attended night school while maintaining a fulltime job during the depression. My mother, who graduated from high school before her 16th birthday, was forced to drop out of college in her sophomore year when her father became seriously ill and was unable to work for a number of years. As the oldest of 3 children, she maintained 2 jobs to help her family make ends meet. What my parents instilled in both my brother and me was the importance of hard work and a strong sense of giving it your best regardless of whatever you were doing while treating all people equally. Helping others was paramount. It is these values that served to direct me to the practice of Law.

Describe one of your recent accomplishments:

I recently represented a husband and wife who owned a business (in the name of a corporation) and the building (in the name of an LLC) in which the business was a tenant. The business guaranteed the bank mortgage and SBA (US Small Business Administration) mortgage on the property. I was able to get consent from the two lenders of the LLC to sell the property, negotiated a deal where approximately $500,000.00 in debt against the property was written off for my client (the corporation) who had a successful business, and was able to have our client remain as a tenant of the new owner of the property at a lower rent than they had been paying before the sale. There was also approximately $20,000.00 in tax arrears that I was able to have forgiven. When the clients came to see me, they thought they were going to lose their business and have to file bankruptcy, due to some creative thinking, neither of which happened.

Are you a member of any associations that you feel are important?

I have been a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Elite 200 Club since 2003 which membership is given to the top 200 fundraisers of the Southern NY Region of the National MS Society. Members of my family, as well as friends have participated in the annual MS Walk since 1991 under the team name “Madeline’s Marchers” initially in honor of (and subsequently in memory of) my late wife who died in 2003 at the age of 60. The continued research in finding a cure for this debilitating disease is extremely important to me, my family and friends.

What do you feel is important about your background that has helped shape you as a lawyer?

My basketball coach in high school told us that “winning” is an attitude, and is not necessarily about who scores the most points in a game. A “winner” is someone who always gives 100% in whatever he does throughout his life. Just as in life you do not always come out on top in all your endeavors despite giving “your all”, but if something is worth doing, it requires your best effort. My coach’s philosophy, coupled with the characteristics instilled in me by my parents, have helped shape my legal career and my burning desire to always give it my best shot.

Do you or did you do any volunteer work?

I volunteered as a coordinator of CAUSE (Community And University Service in Education) tutoring programs at St. John’s University, helping underprivileged children in the South Jamaica, Queens area.
